Carrier Neutral Providers – Key to your business decision

Managed Network Services: Why Select a Carrier-Neutral Provider

By Scott Brueggeman

When companies pursue managed network services, they should pay particular attention to carrier neutrality. Being “carrier-neutral basically means the company is free to use whatever carrier they choose. They’re not required to use any specific carrier of a services provider.

By contracting directly with telecommunications and Internet carriers, a company can get the best rates and services for their specific business requirements. They are also free to use the carriers of a managed network services provider if it makes sense. Experienced providers can provide access to dozens of carriers they have worked with for years.

Selecting a Carrier-Neutral Provider

A managed network services customer in a carrier-neutral data center has the flexibility to connect to any carrier they want. They can also purchase any configuration of services from the carrier of their choice. Best of all, they can be assured of no conflict of interest between a carrier and services provider.

To find the best partner for your managed network services, consider the following:

  • Evaluate how much flexibility you have when changing carriers.  How freely can you switch carriers and how easy is it?
  • Determine what fees, if any, are involved in switching carriers.
  • Find out how many carrier relationships the managed network services provider has established.  The more options you have to enter into your own carrier agreements, the more likely you’ll get the most appropriate services at the best rates.
  • Clarify the offerings of the service provider.  The provider may have unique and cost effective services based on its carrier partnerships.  These services might prove more beneficial than what a business may be able to negotiate on its own.

Why I always invest in businesses who put customers first

ONE of the most important skills I have to have at my private equity firm, Hamilton Bradshaw, is to be able to spot the true potential of a business.

To put it simply I am always on the lookout for businesses that I know I can build into a sustainable and lasting success.  It’s my biggest passion and something I have been doing for almost three decades.
The first principle is that, it doesn’t matter what sector you are involved in, the basics are always the same – right from the very outset you have to know what makes your customers tick.
If you do not have a proper understanding of what your customers want then sadly you are destined to fail. There are plenty of examples out there of companies, big and small, who lost sight of their customers and what they wanted.  The end result is always the same no matter how big or established the name is.

Clueless about Cloud? Why it Doesn’t Matter

“Incredibly, only 16% of people can explain what cloud computing is, a recent survey said. Most believed it was about drugs, pillows, the weather, or toilet paper. (No, I’m not making this up.)

But just because people don’t understand the cloud, it doesn’t mean they aren’t using it. The fact is that many use cloud computing without knowing.

In other words, that lack of knowledge isn’t as big a problem as it might seem.

Of the more than 1,000 Americans surveyed, more than half initially reported that they’d never used it. However, further questioning revealed that 95% of those surveyed do actually use popular cloud services like Gmail, iTunes, or Amazon.”

Power, Pollution and the Internet

Although this article makes some pretty large assumptions, it is true that older data centers were not built with efficiencies in mind. Most of them require that for every Amp of electricity used to power a computer, the data center uses another 1.5 Amps of power for cooling and lights. That’s a 150% increase in electricity needed!

Digital West Networks, Inc. prides itself on being a “Green” data center. We used the latest design methodology when building our data center 10 years ago, and use cooling equipment that only runs as much as it is needed. Additionally, we use outside air to assist in cooling the data center.

As a result, Digital West’s San Luis Obispo Data Center only uses an extra .69 to .73 of an Amp for every Amp used to power a computer. That’s only a 69-73% increase in electricity needed! This is known as PUE, or Power Usage Effectiveness, a measure of data center efficiency developed in partnership with ASHRAE, the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers, Inc.
